Moving to the country

Moving day the alarm clock buzzed and I said "How RUDE" and snuggled into my down comforter. But then the reality dawned on me: moving day!

We jumped out of bed and 15 minutes later, the movers were there. All uniformed and professional, they were pleased at how we'd taken apart all our furniture. This would be an easy day for them. Fascinating for us - they put one of those elevators against our building, because we're on the 4th floor and this way they could avoid stairs altogether. They wrapped all our belongings in woolen blankets and then shrink wrapped the blankets on with a huge roll of saran wrap (for hysterical and disturbing saran wrap fun, click here).

Three hours later we were on our way to our new home, with all of our belongings in a big moving truck. I should say my man's belongings, because I had to give up most of my things when I left my homeland. (*sniff*)

I keep singing that song "Movin' to the country, I'm gonna eat a lotta peaches": )

We made a fire in our woodstove the first night, and every night since. I pray everytime my man uses that table saw to cut firewood. It looks so dangerous.

Is this for real? It's so amazingly beautiful here, and our house is really shaping up nicely. New light fixtures, new furniture, and daffodils are about to bloom. Buds on the lilac bush, I can't wait!

The pleasure is unexampled (nothing to do with moving).

Our first wedding anniversary was yesterday, and we just drove around our new town looking for the first restaurant. A traditional "citizen food" restaurant was it. We polished each other's wedding rings and exchanged them again.

The church bells ring differently here, but they ring at 7 am as they should. The blackbirds sing a cacophany in the morning, and a serenade at the evening, as if to celebrate what good days these are. I agree! I am putting out different types of birdfood seeing if I can get a variety of birds. I wish I knew my birds, tonight there was a bluish swallowlike thing hanging upside down on the treetrunk, pecking away at it. I went out to see if we had bugs, and there were sunflower seeds stuck into the bark of the tree. HUH? Did he do that, or is he just stealing where someone else hid a stash? *shrug* It's a Qvitte tree, a fruit I've never had. There was a big jay there today, my favorite (not sure - bunde specht?) and a bright red sparrow. Mostly chickadees. In fact, there is this yellow and grey chickadee who spends all his days trying to get in our house. It's hilarious, he's kind of crazy. I have no idea why he's so fixated on our house and gettin in.

Tonight a cat hunted moles on our hang. The only cat I've seen. I was thrilled. I have to name him.

I took my first walk tonight. I walked to the store. It's a 20 minute walk down our street through fields and trees and scattered homes. I saw some deer grazing to one side, and then I noticed there was another group of deer on the other side of me. How cool is that: ) Some haflinger horses raised their heads at them.

Coming home I heard baa'ing and sure enough, a new herd of sheep has moved in to the field behing our house. Two border collies moved them along, and then stopped them for the night. I could hear the shepherds shouting at the dogs. As it got dark out and I went out there again to enjoy the blackbirds' songs, I heard a quieter sleepier baa'ing.

We still have boxes everywhere, but we're both setting up furniture and my man is putting in all new lights. How much can you modernize a house from 1890? Not much: ) Everything is crooked, but that's the way things are here. Yesterday my man was in the new wardrobe (there are no closets in Germany), installing clothing racks, and he stepped out and said, "Still boxes everywhere? I've been in Narnia for a year! What have you been doing?" I said "In the real world, you were only gone 10 seconds. Hence the boxes.": )

My greenhouse is planted with lots of veggies and flowers, I hope they come up soon. My bathroom has some too: )

Of course I can't wait to get Baasha here, and 2 weeks sounds like forever. I hope that things go as planned and we get our fence on time.

For now, it's hard to be online cuz it's just so amazing and unreal to be here in this beautiful place.

ooooooh heavenly! We don't have internet service at our farm yet (next week, maybe) so I have to do all my corresponding at work...leaving time at home for the marvelous process of moving in.

Do you think your man will come to my house and play the piano for me?

ps Cool stuff with the moving truck being able to lift up to the 4th floor like that. I've never seen that over here.

Congratulations on the new home and the anniversary! I just love the idea of taking horses to some beach to train them. And I loved that Narnia joke. The cling-wrap website is one of the stranger things I've seen...
