Some photos of my work

The door to our home was a painted-on brown, and after touring the east coast last summer and seeing all their pretty black house trim, I knew what to do with our door.

Not a very nice shade of brown, and who puts brown on a white and grey house? Geez. In this photo you can see the little sign the catholic kids left on our door in January. It's a tradition of Germany for the "Star Singers" to dress up like the three kings, sing carols and collect money for poor children. They leave their mark above your door, and I looked it up - it means "God bless this home." It took a lot of scraping to get it down. Sorry kids, I liked your old tradition of using chalk, not your new stickers!

It looks like a new door! I love it! That is also a new doormat that fits perfectly into this little indented grating in the bricks. I hope people don't wipe their feet on it, it's too pretty, hehehe : )

As you can see, there are no steps to get in our home. That just makes it so much easier for Baasha to join us for TV nights.

There we go - New England in Old Germany. I love it! (But sadly I used enviro-friendly paint, that shows fingerprints. I'll have to re-do it in not-so-friendly paint.) Eventually I'll paint the front fence to match - it's the same paint they used on the door, trying to simulate wood. Black is better.

There's a photo showing the greenhouse before I cleaned it - it was actually quite green but the photo didn't catch that. Hm.

Now you can see inside from outside. I couldn't believe how much work that was - and I haven't even done the roof yet (for lack of an appropriate ladder). I thought I'd just clean that greenhouse in one afternoon, I was so wrong!

Some nice things they left us - 3 large wooden crates that are perfect for firewood (next to our woodstove in the house, full already!), and two in the greenhouse - one with garden tools inside, and one with bags of soil, rock, fertilizer, and limestone. It was good of them to leave us so many tools!

And here's our expanding junk pile. I hope it stops expanding soon - I've got the other half of the barn loft to clean out still, and that's it. I should be grateful that they didn't leave MORE crap when they moved out. And to be realistic, I know they thought we'd use a lot of that stuff. And we may still - we'll have to go through it all before we have it picked up. (Isn't that nice that in Germany, the junk yard truck comes to you? That's cuz no one has a car big enough to take stuff away.) Let's see, how many sentences can I start with "and"?: )

That greenhouse is bigger than I thought, which makes the task of cleaning it look like something i would not have wanted to do ... at all!

Nice door. We couldn't do a black door. We face west and it would retain too much heat in the summer. It would be faded in just one season.

The black door looks great! You guys are really doing a number on that place - but that is part of what makes it your own - and alot of fun! (and hard work!)

It's kind of cute that they left you some tools, but on the other hand, it will take some time to sort through everything!

You are cleaning, weeding, home remodeling machine! Aren't you glad you've got the time to take care of all of this at the moment? I wonder what you would think of my house. It's kind of a light, light tan with brown trim and a TEAL front door. The door was teal when we first moved in 15 years ago and when the house was gray. I've always liked the way it stands out, so I've never repainted it.

I want to paint our new door PURPLE. On a green house.

I know that will make you **crazy**, Lytha. I haven't done it yet, but as soon as the papers are signed (soon? maybe??) I'm heading out to the store for purple paint.

Your place looks awesome!

I agree, the door looks much better in black!
And your greenhouse, whew, that before picture definately displays how much work you had in store for you.
As for your junk pile, it looks like there is actually a lot of usable stuff there :)

Oooh! What a smart black door. It just pops against the white and grey. Good choice!
What an interesting tradition of the caroler kids. The sticker thing is weird, though.

And wow, that sure was a filthy greenhouse. I bet you were sore after scrubbing it clean.

Looks like some pretty good junk in that pile. I bet you could think of some useful things to create with it, too.

Question: about the 'no step' to your door. Don't you have to wrry abour rain or melting snow getting underneath the door?

I'm tickled at the thought of Baasha just strolling into your house, though :)

Leah, I hope WE can do a black door! I honestly don't know, but there isn't too much sun here: )

Laura, Thanks! I felt like that door was my first real successful "number" on that house! But I managed another one that I hope and pray will be amazing in time...that's my next post, once I get the photos on the computer.

Mrs Mom - I love that we have lots of time. Cuz right now I feel we really need it! This is the perfect time for me to be unemployed! I drive out there almost every day with a carloat of stuff, and I'm still not done painting the living room. This weekend is gonna be very big - we have someone coming to do the bedroom walls and the kitchen and bedroom floors. That will be huge! Can't wait!

NM - I love teal. I did my bedroom deep teal when I was a teenager. My parents were so nice to let me! I think I was way ahead of my time cuz now bright colors are popular on that home renovation cable station (HDTV). Oh, for some HDTV here in Germany! Whenever we visit America, we love watching it, and that was before we even had a home! I'd love to see a picture of your home. I always try to figure out which one is yours from your photos.

Aarene, I think a purple door would look fabulous on that house. I love the colors you've got - that green is so pretty. Just don't repeat my mistake and use fingerprint-showing paint. Some sort of laquer is correct, I think?

Cdncowgirl - Oh, you could tell how much work it would be? I couldn't! Now I know. And our junk pile has a lot of wood which we'll see if bits can be worked into the various compost piles I'd like to build. Also there are a lot of nice terra cotta planters we'll give to my mother in law, because she doesn't avoid terra cotta like I do.

Lisa, You said "pops"!! You must watch that HDTV network! I love it that you said that about my door!

You asked if rain or snow might come under the door - good question. We'll see!

I still have the greenhouse roof to clean, *sigh* but guess what - I bought my first two seed packets today at the grocery store! Carrots for Baasha, and snap peas for my man. The greenhouse will have a purpose soon!
