Riding to the moon

What a cool thing, to ride in snow with a fullmoon. I was overwhelmed. It was just so gorgeous, the moon at the top of the ridge I was riding up. The sky was deep blue, the trees black, and the moon was so low it was making yellow stripes on the ground from the tree trunk shadows. Later the moon was high enough to create its normal pale blue light on the snow, and I marvelled at Baasha's pretty shadow cast by moonlight. He was surefooted and happy to be out there, the snow feels good to his feet, padding the trail for him. It was a beautiful experience, wish I could share it. I've done an etch-a-sketch drawing for you, that's the best I could do. Note his little ears, which kind of blend in to the snowy trail.

Sounds absolutely perfect. It was one of those crisp, windy days that makes horses' eyes get as big as saucers. They spook at everything and nothing. So no riding today. I have stayed warm and lazy.

Riding on a moonlit evening is wonderful, enough light to read a book sometimes, like one was there a cetury ago riding in past times pre motor age. I can imagine just what you are trying to share. Takes me back to riding home from a Transylvanian bar.

I love riding in the moonlight, just not when it's cold. I'm wimpy, I know.

I need to start riding again but the ground is only good in the morning when it's cold and then it all goes to mush by noon. The nice days we have had were really windy. Excuses! Excuses!

I'm insanely jealous!

Our full moon is completely obscured by rain clouds...and the ground is knee deep mud. Nothing even vaguely romantic here.

Deep sigh.

What a beautiful time and you described it so perfectly! I love the drawing and the little ears!! how did you do that?

Horses' night vision is something I need to learn to trust. I know it's true they can see amazingly well in the dark, but I still get nervous on trail when dusk comes.

Those tree shadows and Baasha's shadow - wow.

Forgot to mention that I really like the drawing. It reminds me of a Matisse. It would make a great note card.

My etch-a-sketch program is Microsoft Paint, which comes with all Windows operating systems. If you don't use a Mac, you probably have it! It's fun, try it out! Use the little "bucket" tool to dump paint into a section of your image.

In reality there were many more trees, but drawing a curved line in Paint is hard, so I quit before I ruined it.

Thank you for the compliments. It makes me feel better about not having my camera, because you enjoyed the drawing: )

The moon was so bright, I wished I'd had my camera, cuz I could have taken pics without a flash. Like WHP said, you could read a book out there. But it wasn't reading weather: )

Looking forward to the first crocuses, when, oh when will this "silverwhite winter melt into spring" (if I may quote The Sound of Music, which doesn't exist here in Germany).

Paigely, your question is too big for me to answer here. I have a whole 'nother blog devoted to the strange way of life that I experience here, but it's private. I can refer you to another blog, which I find hilarious, that tries to describe what it's like here.

Go to www.nothingforungood.com. I cannot read it without cracking up, but that's cuz I'm here. You have to be very brave to live in a foreign land, or have a really strong support system (a loving husband).

~lytha, who misses just throwing my trash in a trash bin, no matter what it is (*gasp*!!!)
