Gettaloadathis! This is how they measure horses in Germany for blankets. I've been wondering about the nonsensical numbers on turnout rugs. Get this: you measure from the withers to the tail. WHAT! That means if you have a modern blanket that covers the withers, you have to add for this? What? How does that work?! Europeans reading this - help me?
I couldn't get it cuz I know my horse wears a 68 inch blanket, and an inch has 2.2 centimeters. But the blanket size I keep seeing on the Arabians is 125. That doesn't add up. I asked my man, and he said, "Well maybe in Germany we measure horses from their shoulder to their tails." (He meant withers.) I was like, "Well that would be dumb." Now I go online, do a search, and sure enough, he's right. They measure from the withers back. DOH!
Furthermore, I am utterly lost when it comes to sizing horses themselves here. When asked recently how tall my horse is, I had to say "In German? No idea." They use centimeters and thankgod they measure to the withers like we do in sensible America. I just asked my husband to tell me for once and all, how tall is my horse? I had to explain "hands" to him and that 15.1 means 15 and *one inch*, not 15 and one tenth. He came up with my answer. Baasha is 155. My horse is 155 cm tall! That sounds so big! *dance*
NO WAY it gets better! In the UK, they measure horses in FEET. omgosh, like, from where to where? I was wondering why in some sites, they make you pick whether your horse is 5'2", 5'4"....etc. My head is spinning!

In the UK we measure from centre of chest to tail. Can you borrow rugs from other liverys to see what size you need? Some makes here differ quite substantially in size and fit, just like human clothes I suppose.
Holy crap... I'd be too lost for that!!! Bless you and your hubby Lytha!!!
I checked today, google does hands! So if you type, for example, "14.3 hands in cm" it tells you that it is 145.28cm.
Might come in handy! (oh god, awful pun!)
Sadly though, Google thinks that 14.3 really is a decimal. To make it work properly you would have to type "14.75 hands in cm". No one in Silicon Valley has horses I guess.
