Pony pranks that lack subtlety

Baasha saying "Hi mom!" in his two blankets - he's toasty warm under there!

I always walk Baasha thru the long wet grass to clean the mud off his feet before I bring him in. I saw some distinctly pony type droppings in the long grass - outside the fence. hm, either Ronnie teleported his poo, or he escapes and runs thru the big hay fields alone. Hm.

As I wheeled the empty water tanks later, I was stopped by some dog walkers - some nice ones I've chatted with before. They said, "Oh, we have to tell you, the baby pony escapes and runs through the fields, and he attacked my dog (pointing to her dachshund) and I screamed HILFE!! (help) and didn't know what to do, the pony was running after my dog and I tried to save my dog.."

I said "I would have liked to have seen that!" (Who wouldn't? Tiny pony and tiny dog, running together?)

Then a neighbor heard, and came out of her house to say, "That pony baby was in my garden!"

Oh boy. Little Ronnie's causing trouble in the neighborhood. *snicker*

I let the barn owner know, and I'm just hoping those ponies are gone soon.

The mare stands at the hay feeder *all day long*. She's such a doll. But Baasha is thin, he should be standing at the feeder all day, but he's always standing back waiting for them to be done. I don't know when he finally gets to eat - I never see it. I decided to let the barn owner know today that they're not letting him at the food. Hopefully we'll find a solution. I don't want to confine him. Now they're in the muddy sacrifice area for the winter, so there's no more grazing.

We found another house for sale with 3 acres - not sure about it, we'll go take a look. Can't wait to have our own place!

Gotta love those ponies! They are the smartest little things. That little mare is adorable. She reminds me a bit of a Thelwell pony.

Too funny!!! Hopefully the barn owners are not letting the pony founder, are they?

Throw some hay in separate piles...if that little pony is the dominant one..your horse will continue to wait and continue to loose weight. Don't want him skinny before winter. My mare was fed out with a herd and was losing weight...had to bring her in at night to make sure she got to eat all her food. The story about little Ronnie is hilarious...would love to see video of that.

Melanie, can a horse founder eating too much grass hay? I didn't think so but I'm no founder expert.

Photogchic, I remember you telling me that - you had the same issue before, and you decided to separate her at night. I wish I could find another alternative cuz sometimes the horses don't get their breakfasts til noon, and he'd be locked up most of the time on those days. I did talk to the barn owner cuz everyone can see how thin Baasha is, and she gave me permission to put another hay pile out in the shelter. That is great, cuz that opens up a spot at the big hay feeder!

I'll spend the day with him tomorrow, fussing over him, and making sure he's eating hay with me the entire time he's in the barn: ) Oh how I am enjoying unemployment now that my horse is with me in Germany!! (But I really want a job...)

Lytha-
A pony can founder just by looking a food...lol!!! Seriously though, yes, a pony can founder on grass hay. They should NEVER be fed free choice anything, because they do not know when to say enough is enough...kind of like someone else I know... me!!!

i mentioned to the barn owner that molly the pony mare might need a diet. (i hate to tell people what to do with their horses. i was very diplomatic!) the good news is little molly is for sale. or, perhaps for molly, not such good news. she got pretty lucky ending up this winter with an endurance rider who believes in freechoice grass hay! her next owner probably won't be so generous in this regard. i hate to see overweight horses. it's worse than being slightly underweight, like baasha.
